Mayday Monday: Size-Up

Mayday Monday: Size-Up

By Tony Carroll

The MM staff just returned from theISFSI Fall Conference. It was good to meet newfire instructorsand to connect with old friends. Today’s Mayday topic comes from one of the conference presentations. A fire officer from Ohio relayed ideas to help with company-leveltraining. He likes to get the real estate section from the Sunday paper and use the pictures of the houses for sale to talk about fire attack tactics and rescue profiling. So today, go find yesterday’s newspaper and get to work. You will pick a picture of a house from the paper and play the “what if” game.

What if:

  • we are the first-dueengineand the fire is on the second floor…
  • we are the first-arrivingtruck companywith fire on the first floor…
  • we are assigned as part of the RIT and firefighters are working in that room…

Another great use of the real estate section is to find house addresses in your area and ask members for the running route. While not afirefightersurvivaltopic, it is valuable training. Let’s get the most of the $2.00 Sunday paper.
