Eric,
Our department uses a 9 mm static kern mantle rope. Static ropes are not the best for climbing, not enough stretch for fall protection.
Eric,

Most fire departments are not going to buy dynamic climbing rope. Rescue providers use predominately 1/2" static line (12.5mm) in order to meet the 9000# two person load ratings for NFPA. Climbers use dynamic line that stretches slightly under a shock load where static does not (more violent stop at the bottom). Most recreational climbers in my are use the 9mm to 11mm dynamic line with the final diameter depending on the individuals use and weight requriements.

Any day on-rope is a good day. Just be careful about mixing fire service use and recreational climibing when buying equipment. They are two very different classes of hardware and equipment, in both cost and product.
