Size-up training is key

Communication is right after size-up and following protocol. Being able to effectively communicate the initial goals and tasks necessary to achieve set the stage for incident outcome. I start out my officer training classes, though, with a 100 question exam that has been handed down from a seasoned fire service training instructor, Ray Simpson of Maryland, since the 70's and it makes a wonderful illustration. The instruction for the exam simply says, "Read the entire exam before answering any questions". The last question says something to the effect of "Now that you've read the entire exam, write your name in the upper right hand corner and the date in the upper left hand corner of the face page, and the word 'complete' in the bottom right corner of this page." It opens the door for good discussion and sets the stage for training the 'young' officer or candidate.
