Addressing training in a department that has seen much turnover due to retirement, and a large influx of new firefighters and new officers, is a must. Ensuring quality leadership is taught to new officers will determine our success in daily operations. Our other issue is having our voice heard. The Houston Fire Department makes a large amount of working fires, and from that comes some great experience. But that experience is not making it far past the city limits. There are decisions being made on how we should fight fire, and our voice is not getting out so that it can be heard.

Poking the Bear, in the Name of Justice

Everyday firefighters risk something. In the traditional sense, it’s our life, so that we may save the life of another. We risk our health, as we are exposed to hidden carcinogens around the apparatus bay, and on fire scenes.
