Bio:: Denise L. Smith is Professor Exercise Science at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY and a Research Scientist at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. Dr. Smith earned her Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a specialization in Exercise Physiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990. Her research is focused on the physiological effects of firefighting, particularly the cardiovascular strain associated with the combination of heavy physical work, heat stress, and the psychological stress that firefighters routinely encounter. Her recent worked has focused specifically on the role of firefighting in altering blood clotting potential as this may be the mechanism by which firefighting triggers sudden cardiac events. Dr. Smith has coauthored a major textbook on Exercise Physiology and she has published her research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Ergonomics, Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Thermal Physiology, European Journal of Applied Physiology, and Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine. Furthermore, she often shares the findings of her research in Fire Service journals such as Fire Engineering, Fire Chief, and Advanced Rescue Technology. Dr. Smith is a frequently invited speaker and regularly presents her research and applications of her research at national and state-level Fire Service conferences.

Dr. Smith has collaborated with several major Fire Service organizations, including The United States Fire Administration, the National Volunteer Fire Council, National Institute of Occupational Safety Firefighters Fatality Investigation Program, National Fire Protection Agency, and the National Fallen Fighters Foundation.
