Bio:: Hi my name is Pat and I currently serve the city of Gardner, KS as a Public Safety Officer. I began my fire/EMS career in 1995 as an Explorer with the Overland Park fire department. In 1997 I received my Firefighter 1 and 2 certification from Johnson County Community College and my EMT-B certification in 1998. During this time I served as a volunteer firefighter for Ottawa Township. In March of 2000 I beagn working for MAST ambulance in Kansas City where I functioned as an EMT on an ambulance. MAST was a great learning experience where I ran almost 2000 calls per year in a system that runs about 120,000 calls per year. This has been an enormous asset in my fire career as it gave me some much needed experience in handling EMS calls. While at MAST I continued my education and also became an Instructor at the community college I attended for my training. After leaving MAST ambulance I began the path to receive my certification as a Paramedic. While attending the paramedic program I strated working for Franklin County ambulance on a PT basis. Eventually I went full time and finally left the service in 2006. In 2005 I started my career with the Gardner Department of Public Safety. Initially I was contracted as an EMS instructor for an inital certification class. In the summer of 2005 I started as a volunteer and finally in 2007 I received a full time position. Over the course of 2007 I attended the police academy for 14 weeks. Although my primary role is as a Firefighter paramedic, the law enforcement training has greatly influenced and benefitted my situational awareness in all aspects of the job.

As previously mentioned I serve as a Public Safet officer for the department. Currently I am assigned to the fire division and I am stationed at our new station 2 which opened in 2008. In addition to my primary role of responding to calls on the engine, I also am the lead for our training division in regards to fire and ems training.

I was wondering how other departments educate their personnel on fire behavior. I use to do the old boring essentials slides but these were pretty worthless. In February I started a new hybrid program that combined a lot of different ideas. It seemed that our personnel now have a better understanding of the pre cursors. Which in my opinion is what matters. Who cares if they know what a back draft looks like if they are in any type of extreme fire behavior I pray they can come tell me about it.…Continue
