Firefighters rescued five people from two flipped campers in Currituck County during Monday’s storms and high winds on the Outer Banks.

Crews were called to the Outer Banks West/Currituck Sound KOA campground on Waterlily Road in Coinjock about 5 p.m. for “multiple campers overturned” and people trapped, the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department said.

The National Weather Service’s Wakefield forecast office said wind gusts of 50 mph were recorded in the area at the time.

Crews arrived to find two campers on their sides and removed a total of five people, Currituck County fire and rescue said. No one was injured.

A coastal low pressure system brought stormy weather to the Outer Banks on Monday, with winds gusting up to 50 mph and close to two inches of rain. The weather caused minor ocean overwash on Hatteras Island and shut down the ferries running to Ocracoke Island.
