A downtown manhole explosion sent two Eversource workers to the hospital Tuesday evening, according to Boston fire officials.

“Companies on scene at a manhole explosion across from 37 Bowdoin St downtown Boston,” the Boston Fire Department tweeted Tuesday evening. “@BOSTON_EMS has transported 2 @EversourceMA workers to Mass General Hosp.”

Videos from the scene showed smoke billowing out of the ground next to Eversource trucks.

Traffic was significantly impacted following the explosion.

“Troopers are assisting @BostonFire and @bostonpolice on the perimeter of what has been reported as a manhole fire in the area is Cambridge and Bowdoin streets,” Massachusetts State Police tweeted. “We will share more when we have. Motorists and pedestrians should expect detours.”

⁦Eversource shut down the power in the area, and fire companies determined that the air quality in the surrounding buildings was clear.
